How to Make Your Trade Show Exhibit Stand Out

As small business owners, especially those in the start up phase, preparing for a trade show can be a very scary and frustrating time. Exhibitors often ask themselves, what do we take for our trade show exhibit and how do we present it?

You first need to find out the specifics of the trade show you are registered for or considering exhibiting in. If necessary, contact the organizers of the trade show event and get details on the type of visitors that the show attracts and the layout of the area you will have to display your exhibit in.

Be sure to find out the size of the trade show exhibit table you will have, whether there is wall space for your company sign, if there are electrical outlets available, and anything else that may or may not be included (i.e. a table cloth, etc.).

Once the trade show space specifics have been established, then you can move on to deciding what to take with you for your trade show exhibit and how you can ‘show your stuff’.

The following are just a few ideas to help you prepare your exhibit for that all important trade show. (Note: most of these trade show exhibit ideas are based on being in the service industry but will work for products industry companies as well.)

1) If the trade show exhibit table you have does not include a tablecloth, be sure to get one that complements your trade show display and represents your company’s image and colour scheme (without being overpowering). Even if a tablecloth is supplied, bring your own or something to add some depth to your trade show table (i.e. a table runner). That will help your table stand out from other exhibits.

2) If your trade show exhibit space will allow, erect a stand-alone presentation board. On the board, you can show how clients can benefit by using your services. Be creative and make your exhibit stand out. Include pictures, if possible, and be sure your company name and logo are more than obvious.

3) If there is wall space in your trade show exhibit, but your budget is minimal, use your trusty desktop publishing software to create a template of your company name. Use the template, along with bristle board, cardboard, or foam core to make a sign that you can put up on the wall behind your trade show exhibit.

4) Arrange your trade show exhibit table in levels. Put the larger items at the rear, shorter items in front of those, and even shorter items in front of those.

5) Develop a PowerPoint presentation to display on your trade show exhibit table (if an electrical outlet is within reach of your booth). You can make it on your desktop computer and transfer it to a laptop, which you can rent or borrow if you don’t already have one. Your visitors will find this visually appealing and it will draw in their attention.

A Trade Show Exhibit – where size does matter – of your budget that is

A good looking trade show exhibit can be the stark difference between success and failure for your company at your next event. It all depends on how ambitious and ‘wow factor’-oriented your company is prepared to be. The window for success on some products is very small and a good trade show exhibit can give you the edge you need.

There is no doubt that the size of your budget will determine what type of trade show exhibit you'll be looking at. But you may not realize how incredibly affordable high quality trade show exhbits can be. The main expense is in the printing and not the materials. But for a new business or a one or two person business you probably want something that is light weight and easy to move from place to place and that does not cost and arm and a leg.

So you might want to consider exhibit booth displays such as pop ups or retractable banners that collapse and fit nicely inside their own travel case. These styles of booths are easy to take onto an airplane as a regular piece of luggage, and if you travel by car, it will fit right into your trunk or back seat. These displays are self-contained and the cases will not take up valuable space at your table.

A trade show exhibit, if it is doing its job, will pay for itself in just two or three events. And if it is doing its job you will notice the difference in traffic and sales leads almost immediately. If you have a great product or service, there is no shame in promoting it to get the attention it deserves. A ‘wow factor’ booth need not be expensive but will guarantee you every chance of sales success.
